Šipovo is a beautiful town in Krajina, which is located in the far south-west of the Republic of Srpska, that is in the western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies on the pearl mountain beauties, rivers Pliva and Janj, as well as the rivulets Sokočnica, Lubovica and Volarica. This small town with the population of approximately 10,000 residents is surrounded by mountains Vitorog, Plazenica, Ravna Gora, Gorica, Lisina and Čardak. The area is covered with forest and Šipovo itself has become indispensable representative of more and more popular country tourism. In the municipality area there are more than 100 archeological sites. In the Federative Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina two localities in the Šipovo area were marked as a second category monuments under the protection of the State (Register of the Monuments protected by the State). Soko Grad had been mentioned as the third monument, however the war anticipated the categorisation of the fortress. The ramparts, and there are over 30 of them, belong to the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, therefore they can be dated in the period 1500-1000 B.C. The settlement of Volari is an old Illyrian settlement once called Volorai, and the hamlet of Sarići was once called Saritte. Hrid may also be found very interesting, also called Sveto Brdo (Holly Hill) near the source of Janj, where the script from the Roman age is carved in a rock.

11.00 – 15.00 h Active programs in nature with a mountain guide:

• Visiting the educational center in Glogovac,
• In the center itself the lecturer introduces basic caracteristics of the Virgin forest of Janj and the nearby surroundings,
• There are also interesting rare protected plant and animal species, the oldest trees in the virgin forest etc,
• Visiting the location of the „mushroom tour“ in Glogovac (mushroom collecting is organised during the season),
• Visiting the monastery of Glogovac,
• Visiting the Virgin forest by walking on the hiking path which is 13 km long and has rest areas and lookout points long the road.

 

Time needed to arrive to the Virgin forest is 2 hours of a slow walk, and time estimated for visiting the Virgin forest is 1 hour.

 

Note: the Monastery of Glogovac, schools in nature and the Virgin forest are all connected.
