Monument of Simo Šolaja

Simo Šolaja, a national hero, from the second world war. The monument is located in the park in Šipovo. At the time of the initial rebellion in 1941, the name of Sime Šolaja was well known to the fighters and the people throughout the Bosnian Krajina. After the war, in the memories of the participants and the writings of publicists about the most prominent fighters of the liberation struggle, Šolaja occupies a prominent place. He was born in the village of Majevac on March 1, 1906. in a small house-cabin, which had nothing but a fireplace and a dark room, like all other houses in the village. The life of the rural poor and the half of the proletariat grew and lived, like most peasants in that region, whose entire activity was reduced to the maintenance of the naked life. One year before the collapse of the former Yugoslavia, Šolaja is gaining permanent employment as a keeper of forest nurseries in Vitorog and Đule, a few kilometers above the Pljevje floor. In the days of the April war in 1941 and the creation of the NDH, when the Serbian animal was placed outside the law and when the greatest diversion of human mind, dignity and justice took place, Šolaja was not confused for a moment. The first learned about the beginning of the uprising in Drvar on July 27th, and two days later with a group of villagers, he first attacked the composition of the train at the Pliva railway station, which drove the last group of hostages from our region and killed two gendarmerie. The following night at the list capable of fighting and formed troops, Šolaja was elected commander of the 1st Company, and on this basis also for the deputy commander of the guerrilla battalion. The main goal of this company was to expel the enemies from Pljevlja and occupy Šipovo. This happened on August 27th. Šipovo was released from the assault. At the beginning of July 1942, it became known that the group of proletarian brigades was approaching our region. The detachment’s staff had full responsibility for establishing the first contact with these units and organizing a joint attack on Kupres. Solaja invested all in preparation for the participation of over 120 fighters from the ISKRA battalion in that battle, while the others held a position towards Lake and Majdan. When the attack took place on August 12/13, he died a heroic death while charging at the enemy in front of his company!
